Hint Coin

Idea

This is a small render I made for fun to experiment with Blender. I really love Professor Layton and thought it would be fun to replicate the classic Hint Coin.

About the Art

  • Made in Blender

  • Textured in Blender

  • Rendered using the Cycles engine
  • Created in January 2024

I didn't make this with the intention of game implementation, unlike my other models. I thought it would be neat to make a model out of it and play around with Blender and its texturing system.

I based the coin itself on the official real life hint-coin pin I got for my birthday and the logo and just started modeling.

I imported the image of the logo of Professor Layton into Blender as a reference and started modelling on top of it to try and get the truest form of the coin. Eventually I realised I wanted the coin to be displayed on a stand of some sort, though I didn't found anything online that really suited my taste or style of the model I was going for. Eventually I came up with an idea: the stand specifically was inspired by my Grandfather's coin stand who always had his jubilee coins displayed on it.

I was feeling invigorated and went on to texturing the model, giving the stand a wooden look and give the coin a gold and silver look. I didn't like the original pin's look with the rough texture, so I gave it my own twist and with a few tweaks I found a look that I liked.

Already having set my mind on turning it into a render, I added a spotlight, camera and some backgrounds and exported it out. Though getting the lightning right was a little tricky, I eventually found one that I like and exported it and BAM! donezo!
