Picknick

Idea

This is a render I made out of spite for one of my teachers. I was so angry that I decided I would make a happy scene to test my skills and work on my texturing.

About the Art

  • Made in Blender

  • Made using the Cycles engine
  • Created in April 2024

I started off immediately to make a 3D sketch of what I wanted the picknick scene to look like; a few school bags, thermos cups, a few bowls and food containers with a tree in the background. That's roughly what I imagined when I was thinking of when I thought of things that would belong at a picknick. I brainstormed about what foods I would include but eventually left the bowls and containers empty because I couldn't decide on the food. So now it's a scene where three friends just finished their picknick and are frisbee-ing on the field.

When I started modelling I used some things I have of my own as references, like the thermoses and pie mold. I also wanted to play around with different bags, so I created three different ones; an open shoulder bag (highlighted below), a backpack and a shoulder sling.

Texturing was definitely my worst weakness whilst making this render. The tree, picknick blanket and wooden bowl textures were material textures I imported and then applied to the subjects. I had tried to make them myself, but I continuously had problems with the experimental settings that the procedural assets required. The thermoses, sling and backpack, shoulder bag and food containers' textures were all made by myself with a little help from online Youtube tutorials.
