When we figured out we wanted a rabbit to be the boss, we immediately got to work. We found a nice rabbit model on the Unity store page and decided to import it to Blender so we could add in some custom animations and make it our own from there.

Some of the custom animations we wanted to make included a bonk that would send the player flying, a swipe when the player gets too close for a long period of time, a pounce to close the gap between the player and the rabbit, and a belly flop to try and land on top of the player.

Our "Devil Rabbit", as we nicknamed it through the process of trying to get it to work. Some say it got its red paws from the tomato neighbors it ate, but others believe the rabbit tried to kill its creators and has their blood on its paws.

Rigging and unwrapping the models came with its own challenges. Every single edge was unwrapped and parts of the body had been mirrored and overlayed with each other. Setting up the rig was a nightmare, but eventually I succeeded and though it made the animations really weird it was usable enough for the GGJ.

As you can see sometimes the rig would hold some strange positions, though editing or otherwise trying to change it make it worse usually. So, because I wouldn't change the topology of the rabbit that much, I took a quick break from animation and started working on the textures.

The texturing was actually a lot of fun, and I was able to experiment a bit more with Substance Painter than I had been able to in my study. With some pointers and help from my team I eventually got the look and texturing down, and with the animations finished after 18 hours of working on this model, it was finally done.

If I were to do it all over again, I would be making my own rabbit or other animal we would pick. It was pretty frustrating with all the issues arising, though at times playing around with it and see how much you can screw around with it was also a lot of fun.
